Flokati rugs have a rich history. Long before it became the area rug we know today, Flokati rugs were essential piece of clothing for travelers, warriors and shepherds in ancient Greece during long winter seasons. From protection from the cold, these rugs became an indoor home accessory. A Flokati rug was a sought-after present for men often given as part of a woman's dowry for marriage. Its popularity has been carried on for years, until today.

Most Flokati rugs still originate from their mother country, Greece. The rugs are made by knotting the wool with the use of a backing material or woven wool. What makes these rugs extra special is that they are made by hand in looping the knots, and not by some big industrial machine. In a way, the process of Flokati rug making has preserved its history. You might also come across a Flokati that has been made by the ancient water ripening technique. This is done by washing the rug in a flowing stream wherein the material comes out soft and strong.

With the developments in their production, Flokati rugs have gone beyond the earth colors and widened the color's selection. The styles also vary from short and thick knots to the long and unruly look.

So is that all with regards to the Flokati rug? No, not quite. You see, in addition to the elegance of the Flokati rug and the fact that it is the ultimate in retro chic, the Flokati rug further has the advantage over some other styles of area rugs due to the material it is made of. Seeing as the knots in a Flokati is made out of wool (usually from Greece or New Zealand) as well as the backing, it means you have a rug capable of the following: absorbing 5 times it's own weight in moisture, which means that "dry" rooms will be adequately humidified while humid rooms will be sufficiently dried.

Another aspect that ties in with the fabric the Flokati is made out of is the resistance to conduct or store static electricity. This means that they can be kept close to electrical appliances such as computers and televisions.

That being said, all that's left to do is to go out and buy one! Remember, their traditional colors are earth tones - these include white, browns, etc.; all the colors that make ideal design basics. Just take care when trying to use this rug as a focal point as the authentic Flokati rugs seldom have any type of elaborate design on them (and will therefore make the perfect accessory to a different focal point). Other than that, the sky's the limit, with more and more colors added every day for different lengths of knots.
