There are so many ways that you can use a rug to make a statement. If a room is too large a rug can be used to separate several areas to have several unique areas. Use different colors, styles, and sizes to make the statement you want to make.

Putting different rugs together in a single room can give any room a distinctly unique look. Although there is no hard and fast rule when trying to achieve the coordinated look with different area rugs there are a few general rules that will hold you in good stead. Floral designs that contrast nicely with geometric patterns; 'busy' patterns may blend well with simpler patterns and large patterns could complement small ones.

Decide on your focal point. If a piece of furniture is your focal point then try using an area rug with warm neutral colors that help to compliment your furniture and not stand out.

If your focal point is the rug then you need to match the rest of your dcor with the rug. Use bright bold colors to draw attention to the rug and let it stand out on it's own but allow it to blend with everything.

If a fireplace is the focal point use a rug that is subdued in color and pattern so it will not distract from the fireplace. Remember, if more than one element or item compete to be the focal point, the room's harmony may be unbalanced and it will generate an unpleasant ambience. Only one element should be 'busy' in decorating a space.

Other ideas to consider when using rugs to decorate your home include the following:

1.) Light spacious feeling rooms can be achieved by using light colors and patterns. Warm areas can be achieved by using dark colors and patterns.

2.) Experiment with round, oblong, hexagonal and octagonal rug shapes. They may imbue flair and unique elegance to your space or room's floor.

3.) Depending on the room's general appearance, fringes on rugs can add an Oriental flair to a room. Be careful when vacuuming the fringe, though: do not use the vacuum brush or beater bar, both of which can damage the fringe fibers.

4.) Try using worn out rugs to create pillows for your sofa. Add some tassels on the corners in order to style it up.

5.) A colorful rug may also make a good wall decoration. Tack or nail it to the wall, or sew loops at a long edge, run a window rod through them, and attach the rod to a pair of window brackets. You will make only two holes in the wall and the rug will hang straighter also.

Use your imagination when decorating with rugs. You can use a rug in several different ways and create a unique look every time.
